What is HS?

Posted by Shantea Jones on

First and foremost I am someone who knows firsthand about this chronic skin condition because I have suffered from this since puberty. However, I did not know it had an actual "name" until 2017 after giving birth to my second child. This is when I began seeing a dermatologist regularly which she explained to me in more detail what Hidradenitis Suppurativa, or HS, really was. As it was explained to me in an example that kind of made sense, is that HS is when say you get a bump, pimple or how the old folks say, riser it may seem like an ordinary case but with HS it is much deeper. If you were to try and pop or bring the "bump" to a head, once you begin to squeeze whether aggressively or not, HS causes your body to send a signal to your brain that there is trauma taking place at that location and your body starts to work overtime to heal that trauma. Someone that does not have HS, could simply try to pop or bring the "bump" to a head and it wouldn't per se "trigger" an episode but only provide somewhat relief at the site of the irritation. -- Any bump or irritation big or small, unfortunately, can trigger a signal for your body to start attacking the trauma over time with HS. So, in a nutshell, HS starts under the skin and what I am learning may go even deeper than that. As of now, there is no cure and women are more prone to having HS.

Follow my blogs as I continue to dive deeper into HS. I will be giving you tips on how to not only cope with this condition but providing relief from it.
